He was promoted to Assistant Editor of Non-Destructive Testing in 1969 and Managing Editor in 1970. From 1978 to 1984 he was a commissioning editor for Butterworths, specializing in architecture, building and civil engineering.
In 1984 he left Butterworths to join Van Nostrand Reinhold (UK) as Professional and Reference Publisher to launch a new list of professional-level books. He established market contacts, identified authors, and developed and published books on construction engineering, electronics, computing, and healthcare management.
In 1987 he moved to The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors as Publishing Director, responsible for the publishing operations of Surveyors Publications, the Institution's publishing and bookselling subsidiary, with a turnover of £1 million.
In 1988 he left the RICS to join The Financial Training Company Ltd as Publishing Manager, responsible for developing the editorial and production aspects of professional training (accountancy) manuals. With a small in-house department and a team of freelancers he managed the redesign and relaunch of over 100 titles, resulting in significantly increased annual sales.
He and Janet set up their own editorial business at the beginning of 1991.
